Since over 30 years, an urban design workshop between the TU Berlin Institute of Urban and Regional Planning and the Politechnika Warszawska has become an established format. As part of a master’s project assignment („Auftragsprojekt“), a topic from Warsaw and one from Berlin are addressed in alternating years. This year the topic was “FASANENPLATZ REWORK – Dense Infill Redevelopment and Green-based Climate Adaptation for a Livable Urban Neighborhood”.
The urban design workshop was focusing on the Fasanenplatz (Berlin) and its surrounding. The task was to come up with new ideas and design concepts on two different scales: At the neighborhood level, we focused on the potential for infill development, especially along the streets. At the block level, the challenge was to redesign the square with its green space and buildings configurations, improving the green, blue and the grey infrastructure to create a lively and climate-adapted space, while meeting the need for the expansion of teaching and creation space for the UDK (Berlin University of Arts) at the same time.
