In contrast to the built city of today – that is slow to adapt to the desires of fast-changing social realities – how does one design a city to be an always changing, complex reality where predictions are often wrong but yet can quickly adapt and shift according to all kinds of factors? How much can be determined and which questions need to be unanswered until the very last moment?

In this scenario, the Michelangelostrasse densification project is a pilot project for an alternative, holistic take on planning, removed from the speculations of the free market and able to respond more directly to change. It is developed and managed long-term by a merger of actors of various means and agency, and implements a new  ‘continuous dialogue’ planning tool for Berlin  (City Information Modelling), to result in a more efficient and adaptable use existing and new housing stock in this neighbourhood.
